After the burial of the immediate past governor of Oyo State, late Senator Abiola Ajimobi, his widow, Florence, accused the state government of abandoning the family during the illness of her and his eventual death. The state government denied the allegation, saying many attempts made to assist were turned down by the family. RAJI ADEBAYO writes on the intrigues behind the scene.
That the immediate past governor of Oyo state, late Senator Abiola Ajimobi took ill and eventually died from the complications that arose from the lung surgery performed to save his life, is no more news.
But what happened after his death was an accusation by his widow, Florence, that the Governor Seyi Makinde-led government abandoned her late husband that served the state meritoriously for eight years.
In a swift reaction, the state government declared that many attempts were made in holding out an olive branch to the family, to the extent of reaching to the Lagos state government, where the late governor was taken the treatment before he eventually passed away.
But investigation by Sunday Independent revealed that the disagreement neither started during the period the late former governor took ill nor his eventual demise.
Sources has it that the genesis of the difference started during the regime of a former governor of the state, Chief Rashidi Ladoja.
It was gathered that when Ladoja was in power, he bought a land at Agodi Government Reserved Areas (GRA) from the Oyo State government and perfected all the documents. When former governor Adebayo Alao-Akala became governor, and the state instituted a case through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Ladoja on the sales of the state shares, it confiscated the property on the ground that Ladoja bought it from the proceeds from the sale of the state shares. Investigation further revealed that the land was later given to a late businessman, Arisekola Alao, by the Akala administration.[NewsNaira]
